The Metro Leagues Memorial 8-Ball Tournament was created in 2007 to honour those members of the three Metro leagues – Metro, Ladies and Mixed – who have passed on. The event is held every two years and this past weekend the previous attendance record was shattered as 58 players came out to host club Doolys Burnside to participate in a fun day of remembrance. The tournament staff split the entries into 1-point and 2-point players then did a random draw for partners that would see 29 teams vie for trophies and prizes. The day was a fun-filled affair as many players got to meet and play with others they may never have met before.

Action was fast and furious in the race to 3 format. The A-side final saw Daniel White + Eric Bonneau gain the hot seat by sending Lynne Palmer + Brian Bedford to the left to await the winner of the fourth place match. The duo of Tracey Goodyear + Glenn Nickerson have played many events together in the past so it was no surprise that after dropping their second match they powered their way through the B-side, there snapping off six straight wins. The only female to be designated a 2-pointer was Janet Ritcey and she and her partner Sue Dupuis cruised to a very respectable fourth place finish as Tracey + Glenn brushed them aside before themselves falling victim to Lynne + Brian to be relegated to a third place finish. Lynne + Brian had their work cut out for them as they would have to double-dip the final to claim victory but it was not to be as Daniel + Eric cruised to a 3-0 first set victory to claim the first major win for either player.

There is no prize money for this event – all entry fees are given to a charity of the winner’s choice and the IWK Children’s Hospital will be the recipient of the $580 raised through entry fees this year.

Many thanks to all the players who took a beautiful mid-summer day to come out and remember those we have lost; to manager Jessica Grant and the staff at Doolys Burnside for hosting our event; to Doolys Portland manager Jen Reid for providing many of the door prizes for the players; to Brian McNamara and Brian's Cuesport Streams for providing live-streaming of the event; to Craig Teal, who did the ordering, pick up and delivery of the gift card prizes and food for the players; to Paul Gunn and Glenn Nickerson for helping with the draw sheet and keeping the event running smoothly throughout the day.
