Tournament Chart:
Rick Leon punctuated why he is rated the top pool player in Nova Scotia by capturing the 2023 CSNS Open 10-Ball Championship on the weekend of January 28 & 29 at Dooly’s Portland. Leon prevailed from the field of 50 players to capture his 3rd Open 10-Ball crown, having also won in 2016 and 2019. Leon reached the final with wins over Darrell Abolit, Dale Brimicombe, Davis Atkinson, Colin Maloney, and Clayton Dennis.
Guy Tremblay was his final foe of the event. Tremblay defeated Justin D'Eon in his opening match, but fell to Christopher Bright in his second match-up. On the B-Side, Tremblay strung together successive triumphs over Bobby Earley, Austin Brennan, Jeremy Walsh, Craig Teal, John Rushton, Davis Atkinson, Andrew Lafford, Colin Maloney, and Clayton Dennis.
The final race to 9 started in Tremblay’s favor, leading 4-2 and 5-3. Leon then took over the match, surging ahead and keeping the pedal down to cross the finish line first at 9-5.
Leon earned the opportunity to represent Nova Scotia at the CBSA Open 10-Ball Nationals to be held later this year, date and venue to be determined.
The 2022 defending champion Clayton Dennis finished third, followed by Colin Maloney in fourth. Fifth/sixth place finish was shared by Bruce Lilly and Andrew Lafford. Tyler Lawrence and Davis Atkinson placed seventh/eighth. Rounding out ninth to twelve place finishers were Wayne Thibodeau, Mike Basque, John Rushton and Justin D’Eon
Dale Brimicombe had his ticket drawn for a chance at $55 per ball in the CSNS fundraising 10-Ball Break & Run Contest. Brimicombe dropped a ball on the break, and then successfully executed a swerve, rail-first shot on the 1-ball from an impeded cue ball position. Unfortunately his shape didn’t get much better for the 2-Ball and he came up short on a long cross-corner bank attempt. Brimicombe earned $110 for depositing two balls in total. The 10-Ball Bresk & Run fund will be $440 for the next event + half the ticket sales for the day.
Thank you to Dooly’s Portland for hosting the weekend’s Provincial events.
