A record crowd of 144 players descended on Dooly’s Portland for the annual MPL Partners Tournament. The one-pointers and two-pointers were drawn at random to produce 72 teams to challenge for the title and cash prizes. The large field meant the format had to change to get the event done in a day so it would be 2/3 for A and B side in the double knockout bracket.
The action was fast and furious and kept the tournament directors hopping all day, even as they themselves were trying their best to play in the event. The Partners is the most fun of all the league tournaments as you never know who will get paired up together. Sometimes good teams go far and other times not. Conversely, there are always a few surprises along the way as teams that would not appear strong on paper make a deep run. Both would prove to be true this year.
The team of John Hopkins + Alex Lawrie breezed through one side of the field to reach the A side final, while Lloyd Martin + Mike Weagle navigated their way through the other side of the bracket. Martin/Weagle would reach the hot seat, sending Hopkins/Lawrie to the B side try to get back to the final. They would do so in brushing aside third place finishers Harry O’Donnell + Travis Warren. Martin/Weagle were in no mood for a double-dip final as they stamped out a quick victory in the penultimate match.
This was the first major tournament win for either player after over thirty years each in the league. Well done, fellas!

13-16 - $60 – John John Mactavish + Neil Tibbo, Jason MacKenzie + Jheno Francisco, Derrick Rogers + Craig Teal, Jay Hanlon + Christian Mantolino
