Young Over Lilly For 2023 CSNS Open 8-Ball Provincial Title

By Craig Teal

November 26, 2023

Tournament Chart:

Doolys Burnside hosted an outstanding field of 72 players vying for 2023 CSNS Open 8-Ball Provincials over November 25 & 26.

It was not only the largest field for a CSNS Provincial Championship, but the strength of competition was also stellar. Races were to 7 on the A-Side and 5 on the B-Side. It took some time to churn through the first few rounds, but by the end of Saturday’s play, the field was down to 16 players, each guaranteed to finish in the money.

By late afternoon on Sunday play had arrived at the final 4 players. In the ASide final, Bruce Lilly got the best end of a 7-6 match against Buddy Young. This sent Young to the BSide to await the winner of Nok Mantolino vs Christopher Bright, which was won by Bright 5-4. Young then booked his rematch with Lilly in the final, defeating Bright 5-2.

The final would be one extended race to 9. Young jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but then things settled down, seeing a more equitable distribution among the racks won. Young reached the hill first, but Lilly kept himself within striking distance, in fact having a realistic chance to level the match at hill-hill. However, during what looked to be a site run out, Lilly hooked himself on his final object ball before the 8-Ball. With finish line before him, Young made his way through his balls and deposited the 8-ball for the Championship.

Young earns a paid entry to represent Nova Scotia at the 2024 CBSA Open 8-Ball nationals, which have not had a date or location officially announced as of yet.

Colin MacDonald had the opportunity to Attempt the 10 Ball Break & Run as the winning ticket holder. Colin’s attempt was for a $1200 total pot, at $120 per ball. Having made two balls on his break, MacDonald and the crowd watched in despair as the cue ball was kicked in to scratch and negate his efforts.

Thank you to Jen Reid and the staff of Doolys Burnside for their excellent service and accommodating attitude throughout the entire weekend. Thanks as always to the CSNS crew of Dale Brimicombe, Bruce Lilly and Kyle Richard for their tremendous efforts to make the tournament a success.
