2024 CSNS Bank Pool Provincial Championships summary.
Seventeen players showed up to battle it out at the 2024 CSNS Bank Pool Provincial Championships. Some questioned that decision after their first game., ha ha ha. This was an improvement on last years number which was 14. We also had a few late cancellations or we would have been in the mid twenties for attendance. Also, I had a bit of a fail when I picked the date because I didn't notice it was Canada Day weekend.
I think we might try having a bank pool tournament with no entry fees but everyone pays a quarter when they miss. The prize fund would be huge, ha ha ha.
The races were to 5 on the A side and 4 on the B side. Later in the evening we shortened the races to 3 on the B side in an effort to try to get the event finished in one day. We came up a little short and ended at 1230 am. So we had to bring the final 2 players back on Sunday. We only had to adjust a few matches because of time restraints.
There were 4 hill-hill matches and lots of very intense matches where it could have went either way. Of special mention, Tracey "the banker" Goodyear had a strong showing and finished in 5th-6th while knocking out at few solid players. Well done!
For those who have never played Bank Pool there is more safety and strategic play than one would think. Sometimes you have absolutely no shot and then must place the cue ball where your opponent will have no high percentage shot(the rail is your friend). Sometimes you need to decide if you will go multiple rails because so many pockets are blocked or if you will pocket a ball to be re spotted. Figuring out your shot percentage including cue ball position and weighing that against what your opponent might have if you miss is another important skill.
The final 2 players left standing when the dust and tears settled were myself and Peter Kabatay. Peter had wins over Woody Luddington, Shawn Fequet and Darrell Abolit before taking a hill-hill loss to myself. On the B side he then scored a win over Brian White to get back to the finals. My path to the finals consisted of wins over Leonard North, Dana Luddington, Brian White and Peter Kabatay.
This event was a true double knock out. The finals started at high noon and Peter came out firing. He won the first set 5-1 in just over an hour. I must mention he made some very clutch and difficult shots in 3 of the hill-hill scored games. After another one and a half hour battle I was fortunate to win the next set 5-1. Great shooting Peter!
There was a small prize ($15) for the most "5 and outs" of the tournament which was won by Peter Kabatay! He had the only one at the event, nice work!
Special thanks to Dooly's Burnside, Jen Reid and all the staff there! A big shout out and thanks to Brian McNamara for running the stream to showcase this game, it's very much appreciated. Thanks to everyone who played and to Paul Gunn for helping out with the draw. If you play and practice this game your overall game will improve dramatically. I feel like there are a few more players who are hooked on this game which made it a successful event.
