Doolys Portland played host to the second CSNS Predator Tour event of the season. With 9-ball on the menu this time, there were 80 players ready to strut their stuff and the players put on a great show. Lots of new faces and young guns are working their way into the final stages of these events, and the future looks bright for them, but today the end belonged to the old guard. Colin MacDonald eked out a hill-hill affair against Milo Guevarra then went on a tear, dropping only three games in his next three matches to get to the final. A resurging Brian White was never really in danger on his road to the final either, his closest opponent only getting four games in the semi-final. A classic showdown kept the crowd entertained as the players traded games to 3-3 before Colin jumped ahead to a 5-3 lead. Then the unthinkable happened. With Colin shooting a straight-in 8-ball and drawing back for position on the 9-ball, he overdrew it and scratched in the side pocket, leaving Brian ball in hand on the nine. What could have been a 6-3 stranglehold on the match turned into a 5-4 reprieve for Brian and he took full advantage. Known for his never-say-die approach to the table, he then rattled off the next three games to take the title with a 7-5 scoreline.
The 10-ball break contest is a large attraction to our Predator tour events. Ticket sales on the day pushed the pot to $555/ball and Evan Paul was the lucky one to have his ticket drawn. The crowd watched in anticipation as he wound up for the break. A ball dropped but the cue ball found a pocket so Evan settled for the consolation prize of $160. There was a collective groan from the crowd for Evan’s misfortune but also a bit of anticipation for the next event where ticket sales should run the pot to over $600/ball.
