72 players hippity-hopped over to Doolys Portland this Easter weekend for the latest installment of the CSNS Predator Tour 9 (9-Ball). The field was whittled down from a double knockout to the final 16 players (8 from B side random drawn into the 8 A side winners).
Many familiar names made the top 16 of the main draw, including number one ranked Kyle Richard who scored a 7-5 win over Clayton "Magoo" Dennis in the quarter-finals before bowing out 7-3 in the semis to Bruce Wane "Batman" Abadilla. Meanwhile, Brian White eked out a "Thrilla from Manila" 7-6 win over perennial favourite Nok Mantolino in the round of 16, then reeled off two more wins to face Abadilla in the final. The Phillipino never gave him a chance to get into the match however, racing to a 9-1 win that finished in about 30 minutes and most assuredly left a mark on White's butt with the thrashing he took in the final!
There were also two second chance events: Peter Giles dubiously defended his 550 and under Fargo title with a 6-4 win over Kristin Mattatall, with Bob Miklos getting by Peter Ghiz to pick up third place honours. In the 450 and under final, Julie Gibson hard-charged past Gillian Letzer 5-1 for the win, while Tracey Goodyear defeated Paul Gunn to place third in that event. That's a 1-2-3 for the girls - good on ya's!
The 10-ball break contest was up to $345/ball and a pile of tickets were sold during the day. Bruce Lilly got his ticket drawn and everyone held their breath in anticipation of him pocketing a ball or two but another dry break meant he joined the ranks of most potential prize winners this season in settling for the consolation cash only. There are only two more chances at the 10-ball break this season - the final ranking event on April 13th at Doolys Port Hawkesbury and the Open 9-Ball provincials at Doolys Sydney on May 4th. If it doesn't go by then the prize money will carry over into next season's ranking events.
Thanks to our title sponsor Predator for supplying equipment for the event, namely Arcos II balls and the new Predator racks. Thanks to Paul Gunn for helping out with ticket sales. Many thanks to Melissa and the staff at Doolys Portland for hosting our event and also to Brian McNamara for providing live stream coverage during the day.
