The inaugural CSNS Breakout 500 & Under Fargo 9-ball tournament drew a terrific crowd of 52 players to Dooly’s Burnside. With $500 added by CSNS, the hope was to introduce an event where the lower caliber players get a chance at some decent cash payouts in an event designed specifically for them.

As with any new event, a few adjustments along the way were made in deciding the final field, keeping some players out while allowing a few others in, and those decisions and other factors will help determine the entry qualifications for future events. Aside from that, the players were enthusiastic and ready to strut their stuff.

There were 16 women in the field and they were bolstered by the inspired play of Tracey Goodyear, who made it to the final four on the A side before going down 5-3 to Mitch Rutherford, then taking Cary Mockler to the hill before bowing out at a very respectable 5th place finish. Meanwhile, Joseph Brown overcame a hill-hill thriller against Andrew Boswell in the other semi-final to set up the A side final with Rutherford. Mitch was taking notes, though, and in yet another hill-hill affair, sent Joseph packing to the B side to claim the hot seat.

On the B side, Mockler, who had lost his third-round match 5-2 to Goodyear, rattled off four straight wins before facing Tracy once again. This time the match, although going the distance, went Cary’s way, and he followed it up with identical 5-3 score lines over Boswell and Brown, relegating them to fourth and third place finishes respectively. That set up the final match with Rutherford and Mockler. Cary was on cruise control at this point, however, and claimed the title with a 5-1 win.

The 50/50 draw helped raise $300, those funds helping to send three junior players to the nationals. Leon Sylliboy was the lucky winner again, doubling up on his 50/50 win the previous week!

Thanks to Jess Grant and the staff at Dooly's Burnside for hosting our event; to Brian McNamara and Brian's Cuesport Streams for the always popular live-stream coverage; and a special thanks to Bruce Lilly and Wekatesk Augustine for their help in organizing and running the event along with the other directors – the players appreciate all you do!
