A total of 60 men made their way to Dooly’s Portland to chase titles and national spots in this year’s Amateur 9-Ball provincial championships. It was clear from the start that the players were excited to compete with their peers and action was hot and heavy all weekend long.
The men’s division saw lots of great matches as many of the players are so evenly matched that it was hard pressed to pick a winner. In the end it was two previous winners who made their way to the A side final. The highest Fargo rated player that entered was 2018 champion Christian Coffey and he played up to that standard, posting only two games lost in his last two matches to get to there. Meanwhile, Evan Paul was cruising along as well, with all his matches going his way 9-5 or 9-6 to meet up with Coffey. Continuing that trend, Evan beat Christian 9-6 to claim the hot seat. Coffey then relegated Peter Doucette to a respectable third place finish to set up a rematch with 2024 champ Paul. Christian flew out of the gate to 4-0 and 7-1 leads before Evan started chipping away. Trading the next six games, the score stood at 9-5 Christian before Evan picked off the next three to close the gap to 9-8 in favour of Coffey. Christian won the next and was on the hill when an inexplicable miss on the 8-ball allowed Evan to get to 10-9 down. Evan missed a bank shot in the 20th game that allowed Coffey in and he calmly cleared the table to claim his second title.
Thanks to Jen Reid and the staff at Dooly's Portland for hosting our event this year; to Brian McNamara and Brian's Cuesport Streams for a great weekend of coverage; a special shout out to Kyle Richard and Bruce Lilly for taking time to come help with running the event so the other directors could relax a bit and just play – thank you!
