MPL 2-Point Tournament Archives:
Brian's CueSport Streams:
The 2025 edition of Metro Pool League 2-Point Tournament had a magnificent turnout of 124 players, the largest field since achieving a full field of 128 in 2004. This event is always popular due to low entry fee, with stellar competition, as well as being a qualifier for the 2025 CBSA National 8-Ball Championships. The league added $1500 to the prize pool, and provided pizza, sweets and snacks for everyone. Dooly’s Portland was the welcoming host for the annual 8-Ball event. Many thanks to the staff and management for accommodating so many players.
The field was full of all the top players from the league, including several former winners of the event. In fact, the 2025 event was won by Colin MacDonald, going undefeated for the day, to win this event for the second time, having previously won in 2001. In the 24 years since his last MPL 2PT title, MacDonald had come close with runner-up finishes in 2007, 2008, and 2012. Congrats to Colin on the win! Not an easy event to win once, let alone twice.
It was already mentioned that 2004 was last time the event had a full 128 players entered. Incidentally, in 2004, the 2025 runner-up, Dale Brimicombe, was in the final too that same year, finishing runner-up to Shawn Miller. Dale recently celebrated a milestone birthdate where most look forward to afternoon naps as the daily highlight. Instead, Dale put forth an inspiring effort that demonstrated great resilience and finesse. He could literally say he was in his 30's the last time he made the final, but he managed to turn back the clock, turning aside challenger after challenger, with the crowd solidly behind pulling for him.
Jody Swim, had perhaps the toughest strength of competition in his matches en-route to a solid 3rd place finish. Swim’s path had victories over Guy Tremblay, who had won this event in 2022 and 2023, and Nok Mantolino, who had won the 2 years the event was held before that. Swim had also sent Brimicombe to the B-Side in their initial meeting, but eventually succumbed to MacDonald in the A-Side final, and then Brimicombe in the B-Side final.
Rounding out the top 4 was Justin D’Eon, who won his first two matches, before experiencing a setback in his third match. D’Eon dusted himself off and got back to work, reeling off an impressive 7 match wins on the B-Side, being ultimately stopped by Brimicombe.
It’s worth mentioning that Mr Brimicombe not only had spectacular results on the table, but he did so while simultaneously running the event as Tournament Director. An event this size does not go so flawlessly without the help of others. Thanks to Glenn Nickerson and Paul Gunn for their efforts to keep the day running into the wee hours after midnight.
Bruce Lilly was on hand to lend his help too. Bruce was representing Cue Sports Nova Scotia in order to promote a fundraising cue raffle for a beautiful new Predator Cue worth $2250. Demand for raffle ticket sales was high enough to sell out within a few hours, allowing for the draw to be completed. Bafex Teemane of Rockingham A was the delighted winner of the cue.
Brian McNamara's Cue Sport Streams broadcast the feature table from start to finish. Brian’s talents are much appreciated to allow those at home to follow all the action in real time.
As winner of the event, Colin MacDonald earned a paid entry to represent Nova Scotia at the 2025 CBSA National Open 8-Ball Championship at a date and location yet to be named. In addition, the MPL provides a $500 travel allowance to the representative.
