Doolys Portland in Dartmouth drew a great crowd of 76 players for CSNS Predator Tour 4. With 9-ball on the menu for this event, a double knockout bracket was played down to a 32-player single knockout redraw and the cream of the crop definitely rose to the occasion to make it there.
Lots of top names filled the final eight. Perennial favourite Colin Macdonald survived a first-round hill-hill match against Wekatesk Augustine only to be ousted in the following match 7-2 by Jody Swim, who is arguably the best player in the province at the moment. Wayne Nagel, who has once again found his passion for the game after recent and ongoing health challenges, also came out on the right side of an early 7-6 battle with Mitchell Tucker and rode that success all the way to the semi-finals where Swim would halt the Wayne-train with a 7-2 victory and book a place in the final. Kyle Richard , one of Nova Scotia’s best players the past few years, wiped his brow in amazement as a hill-hill 9-ball from Dale Brimicombe stayed in the jaws of the corner pocket allowing Kyle to also squeak past the first round. Then, after dusting Michael Basque 7-3, Richard was himself relegated to another quarter-final finish, his third this season, 7-4 by Wayne Thibodeau. Richard "Buddy: Young was also on a tear in the redraw, dropping only five games in three matches, including a 7-2 win over Thibodeau, to face Swim for the title. Swim would not be denied back-to-back tour victories, however, as he closed out the final with a 7-4 scoreline.
The hot ticket of the day was for the 10-ball break contest, and after sales, the pot sat at $585/ball. Peter Doucette had his number drawn and with great anticipation, wound up for the break. Alas, the cue ball went straight off the pack into the left side pocket, leaving Peter to collect the consolation prize of $185. The next 10-ball break will be likely to surpass $650/ball.
