Tournament Bracket:
Century Snooker Club in New Glasgow hosted the first championship of the season as 34 players gathered to compete for the title and a spot to the nationals in the Amateur 8-Ball Provincials. With a handful of women competing at the nationals this week in Calgary, it was decided to only hold the Open division now and reschedule the Women’s division until December. No live streaming was available as Brian's Cuesport Streams was committed to do a fundraising event in Dartmouth being held the same day.
Last year’s champ Johnny Newman once again made it to the A side final undefeated only to run into young local phenom Brendan MacEachern. Brendan looked in complete control being up 4-1 in the match, but John managed to scratch his way into it and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with a 5-4 comeback win to claim the hot seat.
Meanwhile on the B side, Craig Teal relegated Peter Doucette to a fourth place finish and then came out on the wrong end of a hill-hill battle with MacEachern to end up with a very respectable third place finish.
The action was fast and furious in the final but as Yogi Berra once said, it was déjà vu all over again as last year’s champ Newman once again went undefeated to reclaim the title with a 7-3 final score over MacEachern. Johnny will have the opportunity to once again represent at the nationals next year.
Payouts:
1st $415 + national spot – Johnny Newman
2nd $300 – Brendan MacEachern
3rd $220 – Craig Teal
4th $135 – Peter Doucette
5th/6th $120 – Kenneth Isaac II, Chris Simon
7th/8th $90 – Liam Colligan, Jheno Francisco
Many thanks to Billy Martin and the staff at Century for hosting the event; and to Beth Costello who early on volunteered to help out and after a quick crash course in running the draw sheet, did an amazing job in keeping things going smoothly throughout the day. With many of our directors either away in Calgary or committed to other events in Metro, it was great to have her support and take some of the burden off the few remaining directors so we could concentrate on playing. Well done!
