A huge thank you to all of the 31 players who showed up to learn and compete at this always grueling and difficult game. We beat our attendance from last year by 8 players and we more than doubled it from the very first year! It's amazing to see everyone really enjoying the game(most of the time) and a lot of people talking about how it's their "new favorite game"!
We had some time limits set for our matches in order for us to finish in a timely manner. The A side matches were a race to 4 and had 2.5 hrs to finish. The B side matches were a race to 3 and had 2 hours to finish. If the matches were not completed before the time expired and if there was a game in progress it was allowed to continue to determine the winner. If it was still tied after that then both players would lag again and that would determine who would start a sudden death game with 3 balls frozen on the spot. The first person who made 2 balls would then determine the winner.
We had 3 matches that ended due to the time expiring and 4 matches that went to the sudden death shoot out! Which really was not too bad for all of the matches that were played over the course of 2 days. The sudden death shoot outs were extremely pressure packed but they were very entertaining(unless you were involved in one).
FYI, we averaged 25 minutes per game over the entire weekend.
On day 1 we started at approximately 1130 am and finished up play around 11 pm so we were able to whittle down the field to 8 players. On day 2 we started at 1030 and after long winding road we finished just after 930 pm. If we have any more people in future years we will adjust the races.
This year's finalists were Chris Penney and myself. Chris had wins against Travis Warren, Peter Ghiz and then suffered a loss to me. He then proceeded to go the the B side with his "grinding helmet" on and secured victories over Darrell Abolit, Les Dupuis, Brian White(with the last ball of a shoot out) and finally Jody Swim(with the last ball of a shoot out again!) to reach the finals. My path to the finals wasn't quite as long with wins against Tracey Goodyear, Chris Bright, Chris Penney, Brian White and Jody Swim.
I was very fortunate to win the title in the extended race to 5 final match. Chris was very tired and we could clearly see that he didn't have much gas left in the tank.
We also had a small prize of $25( plus bragging rights) for the person with the most "8 and outs". A difficult feat in one pocket where you get all 8 balls in one turn at the table. It might sound easy but I can assure you it is not. On day 1 it was Jheno Francisco who got it started with one early in the day. I had one later in the evening to tie him. On day 2, Bruce Lilly got 1 first thing in morning to make it a three way tie. Then in the finals I was able to get another one to break the tie and claim it.
A huge thank you to Dooly's Portland Street, Jen Reid and all of the staff there for the great venue and service. Another thank you goes out to Brian McNamara with Brian's Cuesport Streams for all of his fantastic work showcasing the event. Lastly, thanks to Bruce Lilly, Paul Gunn and Craig Teal for their help in organizing and running the tournament.
Congratulations to all of the top finishers!
