2025 Bank Provincial Championships Summary.
A huge thank you to all of the 27 players who showed up to learn and compete at this difficult but fun game. It's a game where it feels really good when you make one ball but you might need to miss a few first! We increased our attendance from last year by 10 players! It's amazing to see everyone really enjoying the game and getting better at it.
We had some time limits set for our matches in order for us to finish in a timely manner. The A side matches were a race to 5 and had 2.5 hrs to finish. The B side matches were a race to 4 and had 2 hours to finish. If the matches were not completed before the time expired and if there was a game in progress it was allowed to continue to determine the winner. If it was still tied after that then both players would lag again and that would determine who would start a sudden death game with 3 balls frozen on the spot. The first person who made 2 balls would then determine the winner.
There was no shortage of drama for the event. We had 14 matches that went hill hill and about 7 that went to the sudden death shoot out! There were a few matches that ended because of time limits but overall that was low for all the matches that were played over the course of 2 days. The sudden death shoot outs were extremely pressure packed but they were very entertaining.
FYI, for the data we had notes on we averaged 18 minutes per game over the entire weekend(helps for planning events too).
On day 1 we started at approximately 1130 am and finished up play around 11 pm so we were able to whittle down the field to 8 players. On day 2 we started at 1030 and we finished just after 830 pm. If we have any more people in future years we will adjust the races.
This year's finalists were Brian White and myself. Brian had wins against Bafex Teemane, Glen Stuart and then suffered a loss to me. He then went to the the B side and secured victories over Bruce Lilly, Wayne Thibodeau, Jody Swim, Shawn Fequet, and Jheno Francisco to reach the finals. My path to the finals wasn't quite as long with wins against Sunshine Bernard, Shawn Fequet, Brian White, Jay Hanlon and Jheno Francisco.
I was very, very fortunate to win the title in the extended race to 6 final match. This match was an absolute nail biter and was over the 3 hour mark. It was back and forth for the first few games and that brought us to 3-3. Then I was able to surge ahead to the hill with a 5-3 lead. Brian shot fantastic and was able to claw his way back to make it hill hill. This description of the final game will absolutely sum up how bank pool sometimes goes off the rails. Brian had the break, he broke and made a ball and scratched(he went to -1). I had ball in hand with 9 balls on the table but no real high % shot that had a built in safety. I missed and Brian scored to get back to even. I was able to get out to a 3 ball lead but Brian again fought back to tie it up. I pocketed my 4th ball and then I missed 2 attempts at my game ball. Brian tied it up and then it went sideways. Then we combined for 22 missed shots and 4 safeties before that last 6 ball dropped. Many of these shots were very difficult but there were also some very high % ones that we both missed(that make you rethink life choices, lol). Great job grinding it out Brian!
Special mention to Jheno Francisco, Shawn Fequet and Jay Hanlon for their strong play.
Congratulations to all of the top finishers!
1st Kyle Richard $460
2nd Brian White $330
3rd Jheno Francisco $200
4th Shawn Fequet $140
5th/6th Jay Hanlon and Jody Swim $100 each
We also had a small prize of $30(plus bragging rights) for the person with the most "5 and outs". A difficult feat in bank pool where you get all 5 balls in one turn at the table. It might sound easy but I can assure you it is not. Many times going for the low % shot to make the last one could cost you the game. All of these happened on day one with Bafex T-Main getting the first one, followed by Mitchell Smith Tucker. Late in the evening Bruce Lilly got 1 as well. Congratulations gentlemen!
A huge thank you to Dooly's Burnside, Jess and all of the staff there for the great venue and service. Another thank you goes out to Brian McNamara with Brian's Cuesport Streams for all of his fantastic work showcasing the event. Lastly, thanks to Bruce Lilly, Paul Gunn and the others (because I know there were) for their help in organizing and running the tournament.
