The provincial 9-ball championships was held this past weekend at Doolys Sydney. Open and Womens divisions were contested with the winner of each qualifying for nationals later this year.

The Open division drew 45 players and the final eight for day two saw six from the Cape Breton region, including a few surprise appearances going that deep in a major tournament. 2019 champion Bill MacPherson sweated out a 9-8 victory over Evan Paul while Terrence Sylliboy upset one of the pre-tournament favourites Wayne Thibodeau 9-5 to set up the A side final which MacPherson took 9-5 to plunk himself in the hotseat. Meanwhile, Port Hawkesbury's Terry MacInnis, having lost in the final eight to MacPherson on day one, rattled off a string of five straight victories, including relegating Paul and Sylliboy to 4th and 3rd place respectively, for a rematch and a shot at the title against Billy Mac. The early part of the one set race to 11 final went MacPherson's way as he bolted to a 6-1 lead but slowly MacInnis began clawing his way back into the match. Drawing level at 7-7, he went ahead 8-7 but a few games later it was knotted at 9-9. The next game saw MacInnis jaw a 9-ball to go down 9-10 and MacPherson took the title by clearing up the remaining balls in rack 20 to secure victory.

The womens division saw a repeat of last year's final as perennial favorite Janet Ritcey defended her title with a 9-6 win over Leigh Ann Giles. Brenna Sylliboy and Ashley Denny rounded out the top four.

The 10-ball break contest has been a popular fundraiser for our organization and Saturday was no exception. With $450/ball and potential payout of $4500 on the minds of many, ticket sales were frantic. When the draw was done and Hugh MacEachern got his number called, there were whispers this could be it. MacEachern and MacPherson are the only two players who have previously run the 10-ball rack, but a repeat performance was not in the cards as a dry break meant a $180 consolation prize was all he would collect this day. The pot will now carry over to next season.

A shout out to our main sponsor Predator, who have provided cloth, balls and racks for our main events this year. Many thanks are also due to Erin and staff at Doolys Sydney for hosting and Brian McNamara from Brian's Cuesport Streams for providing two-table live stream coverage for the entire event.
