Tournament Chart:

A strong field of 55 men took part in the 2023 CSNS Amateur 8-Ball Provincials at Doolys Burnside May 6 & 7. The 2-day event began Saturday, with the final 6 players returning for play on Sunday. The quest to be champion would a challenging one with lots of stiff competition in the field, including defending Champion Wayne Thidodeau, and the recent Amateur 9-Ball Champion for 2023 Kyle Richard, to name a few.

By Saturday evening, the field had whittled down to 8 players remaining undefeated, and guaranteed in the money at that point. In the first A-side Quarter final match-up, Kyle Richard inched by Shawn Fequet 5-4. Brian Bedford similarly took a hill-hill match over Wayne Rodgers 5-4. Jon Kynock was victorious 5-3 over Michael Cullymore. And Jason Ross sent Wayne Thibodeau to the one-loss side 5-3. The A-side semi-finals followed, seeing Richard defeat Bedford 5-3, and Kynock come from 4-0 down to surpass Ross 5-4. Sunday morning’s A-side final went solidly in favor of Richard over Kynock 5-1 to cement Richard’s place in the overall event final.

Recapping the money rounds on the B-Side, Cullymore eliminated Neil Van Rossum 4-0; Thibodeau sent Keir Sylliboy packing 4-0; Fequet bested Michael Basque 4-2; and Evan Paul toppled Rodgers 4-1. The culling continued in the next round with Thibodeau ousting Cullymore 4-3, and Fequet jettisoning Paul 4-2. Thibodeau went on to beat Bedford 4-0, while Fequet won over Ross 4-2. Down to the final 4 players remaining in the event, Fequet was able to force past Thibodeau 4-3, and next Fequet dashed the hopes of Kynock 4-2, to book his spot in the final match-up against Richard.

The final would be one race to 7. Near the midpoint of the match, Fequet was the first to reach four games, but failed on an out to increase his lead. This left the door open for Richard, who made well on the opportunity, not losing another game, to take the final 7-4. Richard earned the right to represent Nova Scotia at the CBSA Amateur 8-Ball Nationals to be held in Toronto in September.

The final CSNS Amateur Provincial event is 10-Ball Provincials, May 13 & 14 in Port Hawesbury at Doolys. Start time is 11AM Saturday. Registration begins 10 AM.
