Tournament Chart:
An outstanding turnout of 26 women, representing the largest field ever for a CSNS Women’s Provincials, attended Doolys Burnside to decide the 2023 Amateur 8-Ball Women's Provincial Champion. The field was large enough that the ladies were relocated to Doolys Portland in order to complete the first few rounds of competition. There was considerable involvement from Cape Breton, with no less than a third of the field making the trek across the causeway to travel to the Halifax area.
With 8 players remaining undefeated, the A-side quarter-finals had some marquee matchups. Ashley Denny took down Gillian Letzer 5-3. Leigh Ann Giles beat Tracey Goodyear by a similar 5-3 score. Gilda Saunders narrowly edged Audrey Ozon 5-4. And Brenna Sylliboy sent Jen Reid to the one-loss side 5-3. In the A-side semi-finals, Giles then moved past Denny 5-3, while Saunders advanced by Brenna Sylliboy 5-2. The A-side final saw Giles become the first to reach the overall event final without a loss, taking a 5-2 victory over Saunders.
Over on the B-Side, Goodyear picked up with a 4-1 win over Cheryl Maloney. Letzer got by Serena Studley 4-1. Reid was eliminated 4-1 by Angela Kilbride. And Ozon was successful over Desiree Marshall 4-3. In the next round, Goodyear dropped a decision to Letzer 4-1, while Kilbride cued past Ozon 4-2. The money matches started with 4-0 win by Brenna Sylliboy, leaving Letzer in 5th-6th place. Also finishing 5th-6th was Kilbride, having been beaten by Denny 4-2. Denny then beat Sylliboy 4-2, placing Sylliboy in 4th. Next Saunders put a stop to Denny’s impressive event, posting a 4-1 victory that left Denny in 3rd place.
The final would be one race to 7 between Leigh Ann Giles and Gilda Saunders. Giles had the experience on her side, having reached the final of many CSNS womens provincials in the past. But Saunders, reaching her first CSNS Provincial final, would overcome experience on this day, taking the match 7-5. Saunders earned the right to represent Nova Scotia at the CBSA Amateur 8-Ball Nationals to be held in Toronto in September.
Thanks to Tracey Goodyear, Jen Reid, and Janet Ritcey, for hosting the event and for keeping the matches moving. Thanks to the ladies for your patience to move between the two pool halls. It was not ideal, but a wonderful problem to have. Your commitment is to be commended!
